Mattie is an artist who was born and raised in Springfield, MN and currently lives in Brooklyn, NY. She holds a bachelor's degree in Journalism from Marquette University and an MFA in Studio Art (Photography) from Georgia State University. She has served as Lecturer of Photography & Media Art at Wesleyan College and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and currently teaches high school photography at Churchill School and Center in Manhattan.

Her practice includes analog photography and filmmaking, video, sound, found objects, writing, and alternative photographic processes. Much of Mattie’s work involves investigating the potentiality of unsightly, disregarded, mundane, and ubiquitous spaces and materials. One of the questions she asks herself is how to stay open to the materials and places that have been swallowed up and dismissed by hierarchies of capital and value — how do we contend? She works to uncover a velocity within material surfaces; to make tangible the affect of attention, forces, exchanges, desire, value, and time.
