Mattie grew up in Southwest Minnesota. She studied Journalism and Photography which brought her to Milwaukee, WI and Atlanta, GA. She has lived in Brooklyn, NY since 2023 and currently teaches high school photography and coaches basketball in Kips Bay, Manhattan.
At the core of her photographic practice is an imaging of surfaces that register the velocity of forces moving through them—the cumulative effects of exchange, labor, attention, desire, value, and time.
The images are made from two primary vantage points—looking down at the sidewalk during daily walks or looking up from her bedroom in moments of idleness. The subjects are sparse and deliberately anti-spectacle, allowing the photograph to gesture toward the convergence of forces and conditions operating beyond the frame.
